New discussion board voting system and date search

A trip to our Discussions centre shows nearly 4,000 people have contributed over 23,000 posts to our discussion boards over the last 30 days. Â
In my opinion, a serious investor would be missing out if they chose to ignore boards as one of their information sources for research. There are loads of very knowledgeable community members out there…
But lets face it, the boards are also full of rubbish. We like to think not as much rubbish as some of our competitors; but inevitably a growing community will bring with it an increasing level of frustration, anarchy, insults, nonsense, drivel, (cr*p) jokes, call it what you will.
So, we’ve revamped our rating system in a bid to separate the good from the downright ugly.Â
From today, you’ll be able to cast a positive post (a ‘recommendation’) as before; but also cast a negative vote.  If you feel the post adds no value to you or others then vote it down.Â
If a sufficient number of users vote up or down on every post they read then the filtered view option becomes a decent way to get to the good bits (in the opinion of ‘the community’) fast. Â
A day or so later , we’ll introduce a revision to the bulletin board archive - search by date. Want to know what the community were saying about a stock a day before and a few days after a press release issued on the 25th May 2007 ?  Very time intensive currently. This will be as simple as entering the date range later this week.

Excellent Idea. Should help filter out the drivel.
New voting system is not a great idea as all you will get is holders of a stock leaving a positive vote for no reason , and any negative comment about a stock you will get a flood of negative votes by the holders.
Seems a ridiculous idea to me.
Back to a simile of the old blue ticks and red crosses system which went out with the ark!
However, when not abused by the diehard bulls and bears, reds and blues can be marginally helpful.
And thankyou for removing the medals - they made me feel an absolute fraud!
I agree some sort of system need to be in place.
Could we just not rate the posts from o to 5.
I would say the voting system will now create an environment of people negaitvely voting posters they just don’t like, REGARDLESS of the content, which devalues the discussion and makes people either argue, or write posts just to get positive votes.
This will kill the value of the discussion groups.
Regarding the survey about authenticating people who post on bulletin boards, I’m personally happy to authenticate using my bank account, but many people won’t like it. A lot of useful posters might be lost as well as some of the time-wasters and duplicates.
Rather than block everyone who hasn’t authenticated, why not use something like a medal or a dustbin to show who has or hasn’t authenticated. Combine this with a facility for the viewer to ignore all unauthenticated posters.
This could be an interim measure while introducing the authentication, so that we don’t just lose all the amusing posters. Disadvantage is that we will still see one side of the flame wars between unauthenticated shorters and authenticated rampers.
