SMS alerts launched on interactive investor

We expanded our email based alerts today on www.iii.co.uk, adding the ability for users to receive a price or news alert to their mobile (’SMS’).

Price alerts are available to any registered user, and work as follows :-

1. Ensure your master phone number in your Account profile is your mobile number. UK numbers only.
2. Add the stock to one of your portfolio folders if not already
3. Click the alert link when viewing the entry in your portfolio
4. Add the alert based on the price conditions you wish (Quotestream subscribers can also set alerts for RNS news alerts)
5. Choose to send the alert to your mobile number
6. Repeat the ‘add alert’ process if you wish to also send to your email address

Currently SMS alerts are sent free of charge, however we reserve the right to introduce a cap or usage charge depending on uptake levels.

Enjoy.

I used to have two email addresses available for alerts to be sent to (one was an orange address that gives me a free SMS message for urgent alerts).

The new system only allows one email address or one SMS that ii have to pay for. I wonder if all my existing alerts have been switched to the wrong email address…

The default phone number that the system has used is “Business Number Extracted From Backend Table tblphonetype” which happens to be a landline, not a mobile. I wonder how well the BT voice synthesizer deals with ii’s text?

The change that I would like on the Alert page is for all my alerts on that share to be displayed while setting a new alert. That way I can see if I’ve already set several similar alerts, and delete unnecessary ones.

I know I can do this using “All my alerts” but I don’t see that until after I’ve set the new alert.

Another thing that would be useful is to be able to store a short note with each alert, to remind me why I set it. Notes like “Fallen 20% below Tom’s tip. Consider buying?” or “Fallen 20%, sell ASAP.” Sometimes an alert doesn’t trigger for years, and I’ve forgotten why I set it.

A SMS message can be 160 characters, so a few are probably spare to allow a user’s note to be added.

I received my first SMS alert at 8:00 this morning. Much quicker than the emails - presumably there is no 15-minute delay.

Oddly, the SMS doesn’t arrive as a normal text message but as a “Service message” which goes into the web service inbox on my Orange phone. Messages in the list just appear as “Interactive I…”.

When you select the message, don’t bother with the default option - select Details instead, to see which share the message refers to. The default option will use GPRS to open the Interactive Investor mobile website, offering to search for VOD.L (?) price and not telling you anything about the alert message. This will cost you about 15KB (6p) if you haven’t already paid for unlimited internet access for the day.

The alerts have a 2-hour expiry, so they don’t clutter your phone. However, I suspect that this means you won’t see the message at all if you aren’t in range within that two hours. Normal SMS messages last for 7 days before expiring.

    Thanks for the feedback Dave.

We’re going to change the WAP Push message to a regular SMS for price alerts by Monday and remove any timeout on the gateway we send via.

Will also look at your other suggestions asap.

    Regards,

    Tim
